Prayer for Ukraine 🇺🇦 Conte, charcoal and acrylic 61x46cm
Forgive me reappropriating a previous drawing: The figure represents Mother Ukraine holding in one hand a sword from which sprouts new life and in the other a declaration of intent. Putin, the infantile despot in the background pisses into the wind. The howling gales of war rage while Mother Ukraine offers succour to the anxious boy and dogs. ![]() Mike has been included in the February 2022 Flux exhibition. He is showing 4 etchings. The virtual show can be accessed here: The Flux Review Exhibition It's been an unexpected pleasure to see my wine label art gracing many instagram posts.
Grim visions inspired by Goya's heart rending 'Little Prisoner' etching, printed in a little Yorkshire studio reaching high society across the globe. You just can never tell. ![]() My work has been included in Bradford's Big Screen event which will be shown throughout January and February in City Park. Three etchings and a statement will appear in loop sequence followed by five other artists with three examples of their work. The showcase has been organised by Colin Neville with Bradford City Council to promote the best of culture in the region and is likely to play a key role in preparation for the City of Culture 2025 bid. The digital slide show begins at 12:30pm every day. With thanks to Bradford T&A and Keighley News for their generous coverage of the event ![]() Following their visit to the Cliffe Castle exhibition I had a studio visit from some friends, including my life drawing teacher from several years ago, Sheila Maddrell. She kindly gave a succinct appraisal of my work, something that is always difficult for an artist to step back a do themselves: 'Mike is not afraid to confront the dark or horrific or sexual in humanity. By combining close observational drawing with flights of fancy, references to art history and unexpected juxtapositions he comes up with new and often disturbing images. The quality of line in the drawing is interesting in its searching quality and rich variety. The images need time from the viewer so more things and thoughts can reveal themselves. They can be puzzling in a good way. Giving the work poetic titles adds yet another layer to the experience of looking.' ![]() Mike has been included on the Not Just Hockney website, a wealth of information and images about artists connected to the region: 'This non-commercial website is an illustrated guide to professional artists past and present who were born, or have made their home, in what is now known as the Bradford Metropolitan District – including David Hockney.'
